Ngā Kākahu o Mua | Leather Platter Mats

from $40.00

Crafted from premium leather garments and offcuts, these platter mats offer a refined balance of grip, damping, and tactile warmth. The natural fibres help reduce static, lower surface noise, and provide a smooth, stable interface between your record and the platter. Each mat has a reversible finish that gives you flexibility in both sound and style. Durable, visually rich, and acoustically functional. An affordable upgrade that enhances both the look and performance of your turntable.

Traditional rubber mats damp ‘ringing’ of metal platters by decoupling the record from the platter, but they can often over-damp the system creating a ‘flat’ or ‘dead’ character. They also have inherent springiness which can amplify room or airborne vibrations and cause micro fluctuations in speed, detectable to a keen ear. Common felt ones offer superior acoustic behaviour but are very prone to static build up, which can be heard as pops and clicks during playback. Leather offers a solution to this problem with a static-free, moderately-damped solution while being very gentle on your records. Reversible leathers provide slightly different acoustic behaviours (suede = warmer, smooth = brighter) allowing the listener to fine tune to personal taste.

Ngā Kākahu o Mua (Old Clothes) - Named to honour a past life protecting the animal from which it came, then as kākahu (clothing) providing warmth and protection to us humans, and now protecting your records with the soft touch of Papatūānuku (mother earth).

NOTE: Each colour has a different thickness due to nature of material sourcing in circular product ecosystems. If you’re unsure which is best for you, just ask us!
